▼▼□-Ø36[ A Dungeon Crawl]
Summer is in full swing here. I almost missed this entry because of all the summer activities we’ve got going on. It’s all super good stuff: awesome concerts, kids’ soccer, and fun camping trips with the family.
Speaking about summer, if you’re going to THAT conference in July I’ll be giving a talk. So make sure to stop by and say Hi!
// New Game Process
I’ve been slowly making progress on my new game. I think I’ve decided to work on a dungeon crawler. I’m a big fan of TTRPGs, and I really enjoy the old-school approach to some of the new OSR games.
Right now I’m currently working on the systems for the game and figuring out how things are going to work. I’ve mapped out different dice-rolling mechanics and have walked through how those things might work on paper.
I’ve also worked through building out ( following a few tutorials ) a door system and an inventory system. Both work well but I need to fold them into a single system that works with each other. I’ll be doing that next while I start to test out some of the early mechanics.
I’ve been trying to keep things really simple and reusable but also balancing the fact that I’m trying to make an MVP first and I can go back and build more robust systems later on.
Stylistically and thematically I’m not sure what I’m going to go with yet. I think I’ve switched my core idea a few times already. I’ve got different themes in mind like a Southern Gothic theme, brutalist sci-fi, and even dark fantasy. But with what I’m working on I’m trying not to worry about that yet until I get a first draft of all the mechanics I’m thinking about and it feels pretty good to play.
I know this is a bit of a short newsletter this month and a bit rushed, but I’m hoping to have a playable v1 here soon!
Have a great month.
